The 2024 annual report includes the main activities and successes of the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park last year.

The Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) has published its 2024 Performance Report, a comprehensive document showcasing the activity, achievements, and impact of one of Southern Europe’s most vibrant scientific ecosystems. With 1,700 people from 70 different countries, the PRBB closes the year with a solid commitment to collaborative, sustainable, and high-quality research.

Training, wellbeing and best practices as key themes in 2024

This year has seen a strong focus on nurturing scientific talent and promoting wellbeing in research. The PRBB Intervals training programme delivered 42 workshops with over 400 participants, including new sessions on burnout, impostor syndrome and narrative CV writing. The Good Scientific Practice Working Group also intensified its activities with discussions on doctoral supervision and the ethical use of artificial intelligence.

New leadership and recognition

In 2024, Jordi Medrano was appointed as the new general administrator of the PRBB. Moreover, PRBB Director General Jordi Camí was awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi by the Government of Catalonia, in recognition of his outstanding scientific and social contributions to biomedical research.

Sustainability and infrastructure investment

The PRBB made significant infrastructure investments during 2024, reinforcing its environmental commitment. Over 12,000 LED lights and 170 solar panels were installed, generating an estimated annual energy saving of 900,000 kWh. Major upgrades were also carried out in the Data Processing Centre and the Animal Facility to support cutting-edge research.

A diverse and cohesive community

The PRBB’s scientific community is becoming increasingly diverse, with 33% international staff and a notable milestone: for the first time, women represent 51% of principal investigators. The park also promoted inclusion through initiatives such as the new BeyondAbility group and the annual OpenPRBB, which welcomed 1,200 visitors and counted on 250 volunteers this year.

The full report is now available, offering a detailed look at the PRBB’s progress in supporting science, community and social impact throughout 2024.
