11F at the PRBB: standing up for female scientists

One day, two events and many voices united to claim the importance of women in the scientific world.

On February 11, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee of the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) organizes two virtual events to highlight the crucial role of female researchers in the scientific field.

In addition, from February 1 to 10, researchers from different PRBB centers will share their work and experience as women to defend the importance of equitable science with a gender perspective.

Round table: I am a Woman and a Scientist

From 12h to 13h the first activity of the 11F will take place, organized with the support of the Spanish Society of Neuroscience (SENC): a round table in which the participants, from the Department of Experimental and Health Sciences, Pompeu Fabra University (DCEXS-UPF) and the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM), will discuss various topics, such as the impostor syndrome, job difficulties associated with gender or feminism in the scientific field, among others.

The debate will be moderated by UPF PhD student Pilar Ortiz, and will feature the participation of:

  • Lorena Galera (PhD student, UPF)
  • Marta Barrera (PhD student, IMIM)
  • Cristina Plata (Technician, UPF)
  • Ana Martin (Postdoc, UPF)

Wikimarathon

In the afternoon, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., the Viquimarató will take place, an event in which participants will increase the visibility of women scientists through the creation of Wikipedia entries. This activity is held thanks to the support of ViquidonesUPF, Amical Wikimedia and the Group of Gender Perspective in Science of the Catalan Association of Scientific Communication,

Thus, work will be done both on biographies of female researchers, as well as on articles on different disciplines where the scientific contributions of women are not sufficiently represented, with the intention of creating, translating or improving articles.

At the beginning of the session there will be a short introduction to Wikipedia, in which different tools of the platform will be explained to facilitate the work of editors. Then, participants will work autonomously.

IMPORTANT: Registration does not necessarily imply participation during the whole event, but free attendance at any time during the session (from 5 pm to 7 pm).

Gender inequalities, unfortunately, still prevail in our society and the scientific field is no exception. Thus, although the road is long and does not seem easy, in the PRBB we are committed to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, and we believe that small gestures and activities can contribute to achieving, as soon as possible, the necessary values for a better society.
