Pride under the sun

The unprecedented heat wave in Barcelona did not stop this year’s ‘Pride Walk’ to celebrate the Pride Month and the LGBTQIA+ community at the  Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB).

The event marks the 56th anniversary of the Stonewall riots which gave place to LGBTQIA+ Pride demonstrations and commemorations.

The “Pride walk” took place on the 2nd July from 9’15 to 10am, with about 30 people from the PRBB community. Due to the high temperatures, the initial itinerary of 5km was changed for a short walk around the renovated area of the harbour – in the shade.

Upon returning, the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) distributed fresh fruit and water to the participants who were able to contribute to an activity within the framework of the European INCLUDE project to propose actions to improve the inclusivity of research centers.

The proposals collected were:

  • Mandatory inclusivity training for newcomers.
  • Working on ageism –  taking into account that women are affected more by it.
  • Hygienic menstrual products in bathrooms (female, male and no-gender).
  • Asking for a GEDI statement as part of the first interview when hiring, e.g. How would the candidate contribute to GEDI principles?
  • Real visibility of diversity not just on paper.
  • Funding for inclusive events.

The “Pride walk” was organised by the CRG Gender Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee (GEDI), together with the PRBB Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee and the PRBB LGBTQIA+ Group.
