A look back at the PRBB in 2019

“The past, like the future, is indefinite and exists only as a spectrum of possibilities.” With this quote from Stephen Hawking begins the current Performance Report 2019 of the PRBB. From an unusual perspective marked by Covid-19, the PRBB invites us to review the main highlights and activities of the past year.

In 2019 the PRBB recovered the characteristic sheet of water of the building. This sheet of water located at the top of the auditorium makes the light in the inner square more vibrant and connects the building with the sea.

The world celebrates the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci in 2019. A good opportunity to commemorate this multidisciplinary painter and scientist and at the same time explain the research being carried out at the PRBB centers to the public. In collaboration with the TMB Foundation and the Barcelona Metropolitan Area (AMB), a mural decoration was carried out at the Ciutadella/Vila Olímpica metro station with the title “Leonardo at the PRBB. The exhibit was visible from July 25, 2020 until the Science Week in early November.

Data and statistics

The report also updates the data on scientific activity in the park, which is stable: 1,170 scientific publications (1,167 in 2018), 316 scientific conferences (277 in 2018), consumption of 264,625 liters of liquid nitrogen (259,847 in 2018) and 24,508 Kg of carbon dioxide (20,529 in 2018) are some of the figures.

The PRBB closed last year with a total of 1,360 people (1,312 in 2018) according to the last demographic data. The group of residents that has grown the most in recent years is that of laboratory technicians, who represent almost 34%. In real numbers there are 167 senior researchers (12%), 254 Postdocs (19%), 243 doctoral students (18%), 460 research technicians (34%) and 236 employees in administration (17%). 335 of the total residents are foreigners (25%).
