She seems to be walking away to climb a muntain, but in reality the backpack that Patricia de Llobet is wearing is to do science. Specifically, it is measuring exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) in Ciutadella Park, Barcelona.
Patricia is a research technician at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal) where she works on the GOLIAT project. This European project, coordinated by Mònica Guxens and involving 21 countries, studies the exposure to RF-EMF, especially 5G, and its potential effects on human health.
In order to understand how these radiations affect our body, we need to first quantify how exposed we are to them. This is why researchers measure exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields in various inner and outer microenvironments, such as public transport or parks.
To do this, they use a personal exposimeter (ExpoM-RF 4) and a mobile device equipped with an additional RF-EMF sensor. Through a mobile application, the researcher marks the type of scenario where the exposure is measured (park, public transport…); and the equipment, which is geolocated, makes one reading of the level of exposure to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMF) every few seconds.
