Re-opening the labs

After months of lockdown and working from home – and schooling from home, and exercising from home, and socialising from home – slowly but surely, the labs at the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) are starting to ‘re-open’, as this photo shows. It was sent by Raul Peña, from the research group led by Antonio Garcia de Herreros at the Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute (IMIM).

With many new measures in place – washing hands, social distancing, gradual come back – some of the experiments that had to be cancelled or put on hold will slowly be able to take place again.

Some labs are still not back to the building. Others are taking turns to make sure there are never too many people in at the same time. It will take time, but some of the research activity that is so essential will finally be able to resume and advance again. Because Covid19 research is, understandably, now the focus of many researchers. But research on cancer, on cardiovascular diseases on pollution or even evolution cannot be put aside. It all adds up to our scientific knowledge – our best tool to confront the coronavirus crisis, and those to come.
