The second season of ‘Absolutos y Relativos‘ starts today, Tuesday September 12th, after the success of the first season. With the help of the scientific journalist Luca Tancredi Barone in this episode we will meet Roberto Elosua, coordinator of the Epidemiology and cardiovascular genetics group at the Hospital del Mar Research Institute and professor at the University of Vic – Central University of Catalonia.
The REGICOR project (Registre Gironí del Cor) is, in Roberto’s own words, the “flagship” of the group. A project that has monitored, since the 70s and 80s, the incidence of myocardial infarction in the population of Girona, in Catalonia. And they have observed, among other things, that the age of onset of cardiovascular disease is delayed by about 10 years in women.
His group is also studying the factors that make people more or less at risk of suffering a cardiovascular event – a risk that is never zero. As the researcher says: “In the draw for cardiovascular diseases, we all have a ballot”. And thanks to following 11,000 people since 2000, they have been able to validate a mathematical function that calculates the probabilities of suffering a myocardial infarction in the next 10 years. This calculation, which they have called risk, has already been implemented in all primary health centres in Catalonia and in other parts of Spain.
In addition to knowing what risk factors can increase the chances of suffering a heart attack, and talking about the effects of the Mediterranean diet, in this episode we will also learn about Roberto’s other professional side; teaching.
