Laboratory material and the challenge of sustainability

The search for knowledge through scientific research requires precise and specific tools, such as the various laboratory materials we use. From test tubes – like the ones seen in this photo by Hospital del Mar Research Institute researcher Neus Martínez – to microscopes, sequencing equipment or the different measurement instruments, these components play a fundamental role in each step of the research process.

However, these laboratory materials – many of which are made of plastic -also carry a significant environmental footprint. At the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), we are committed to the cause of sustainability, and we are taking measures to gradually reduce our environmental impact.

As we advance our research, we also explore greener alternatives – such as changing the temperature of freezers – and we work together to find solutions that harmonize with our environment and the planet we share.
