According to the latest demographic data (December 2023), the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) hosts 1,558 people – 1,695 if we include the staff of external companies who also work here. As we do every year, we take a look at the evolution of our demographics.
The most notable changes in 2023 are the increase in both technical staff and women in Principal Investigator (PI) positions. Technical staff represent 36% of the staff and have been increasing since 2020. On the other hand, and despite being the majority in the park (stable at 60%), women have always been under-represented in the PI group. This year, for the first time, women are approaching parity, with a growth from 33% to 45% female PIs over the last four years. This means that the proportion of female PIs is now the same as the proportion of female postdocs and PhD students at the Park. The majority of technical and administrative staff are also women, at 65% and 74% respectively.
The PRBB remains a centre with young staff. The majority of residents are between 26 and 35 years old (41%) and the second largest age group is between 36 and 45 years old (23%).
It is also becoming more international. The number of foreign employees has risen from 1 in 4 to 1 in 3 over the past four years. The PRBB employs people from 68 different countries and all continents of the world. The most represented countries are currently Spain, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States and Argentina, in that order.
In terms of research centres, the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) and the Hospital del Mar Research Institute are the two centres with the largest number of staff, together accounting for more than half of the park’s staff. They are followed by the Department of Medicine and Life Sciences (MELIS-UPF), the Institute for Evolutionary Biology (IBE: CSIC-UPF) and the Barcelona Institute for Global Health (ISGlobal), which account for around a third of the staff. The PRBB also employs 68 people from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory – Barcelona (EMBL Barcelona) and 30 from the PRBB Consortium. Finally, there are 18 people from the Institute of Applied Radiopharmacy of Barcelona (IRAB) and 137 people from external companies providing services in the park.
