We live in the Anthropocene, a current era in which 30,000 species become extinct every year, approximately. The previous mass extinctions happened due to natural causes. The current mass extinction is caused by humans being. What brought us here? Can conservation measures stop the Sixth Extinction?
Konstantina Mitsi, PhD student at the Multicell Genome research group, leaded by Iñaki Ruiz Trillo at the Institute of Evolutionary Biology (IBE), explained the origin of the previous mass extinctions and she compared it to the current event we are living, caused by humans. The talk given by the young researcher, with a duration of less than 10 minutes, was framed within the first edition of the Biennal Ciutat i Ciència, an initiative that offered, through February 2019, more than 70 free scientific outreach activities in many different institutions of Barcelona, such as the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB).
