PRBB Social Activities: a meeting point for socializing beyond research

A self-managed mailing list of approximately 800 people organizes social activities open to all PRBB residents.

Around 80 PRBB residents joined the last anti-retreat organized by the prbbsocialactivities community.

The prbbsocialactivities group is an informal group made up of staff from all PRBB centres, as well as some former residents of the park.

Through an email distribution list with more than 800 active addresses, this self-managed community echoes the different social activities that are organized at the PRBB, such as the beach volleyball championship or the breakfasts by the Incubakers.

But they also organize other events, such as the ‘beer sessions‘ open to all those working at the PRBB and its centres; indoor volleyball training throughout the year, for those who want to perfect their technique and prepare for the official league that takes place every summer; a skiing trip every February; or the famous “anti-retreat”. The latter is a weekend meeting in a rural house, similar to the scientific retreats that centers and many laboratories do, but focused exclusively on fun and socialization. And again, open to the entire Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), which offers a good opportunity to interact with people from other centres.

“Some of these activities are very well received; more than 100 people participate in the beer sessions, around 80 people participate in the skiing and anti-retreat events, and the beach volleyball championship has more than 400 participants each year,” explains Jose Potensa, from the research service at UPF, one of the organizers of the volleyball championship and an active member of this social community.

In addition to leisure and making friends, this list is also very useful for people who have just arrived and need help, for example, finding accommodation. And the community is always open to new initiatives; recently the list announced women’s boxing classes on Wednesday afternoons in one of the rooms in the inner square of the PRBB, and also a theater group that meets on Thursdays.
