Artificial Intelligence (AI) is set to revolutionize research (and society at large) in the coming years. But hand in hand with the amazing possibilities that it promises, if not properly controlled, the lack of transparency of AI has the potential to exhacerbate existing biases, discrimination and unfairness, as well as disseminate mistakes or false information at incredible speed.
The European Union has recently approved guidelines to ensure the balance between fostering AI advancements and safeguarding fundamental human rights and societal values, namely:
- The EU Trustworthy AI Guidelines
- The EU AI Act – the world’s first comprehensive AI law.
These two regulations aim to provide a framework for developing AI that is lawful, ethical, and robust.
AI holds great promise, but also high risks. The new EU legislation aims to ensure the balance between the two, and will be discussed in an event at the PRBB on October 30th.
To better understand these regulations and how to ensure the most efficient and ethical use of AI in research, the PRBB Good Scientific Practice Group is co-organising an event together with ERION-EARMA (the European Research Integrity Officers Network), a network of experts on research integrity of which the PRBB Group is a member. The event, entitled “Artificial Intelligence and Ethics, the Big Wave”, will take place on October 30th at the PRBB Auditorium.
During the morning, the new guidelines on ethics by design for AI will be presented and discussed with representatives from the European Commission, researchers and representatives of the CoARA’s ethics and integrity working group.

In the afternoon, a closed session will be held for the ERION community, to work on the challenges faced as research managers and to share experiences and best practices in this field.
