In the fifth episode of the outreach Spanish podcast from the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), ‘Absolutos y Relativos‘, we neet Patricia Robledo, principal investigator of the Integrated Pharmacology and Systems Neuroscience Research group at the Hospital del Mar Institute of Medical Research (IMIM), where she studies the effects of Cannabis on schizophrenia.
Psychobiology is a discipline that studies the neural basis of the brain. Patricia’s passion for this field began when, at the age of 16 in high school, she read a book that planted in her “the seed of understanding how the brain can modulate human behavior”. Thus, she found her vocation.
In the early 2000s, Patricia landed at IMIM, where she began to study which processes and neurotransmitters were affected by ecstasy use. But it was not until 2012 that she began to collaborate with the psychiatry team at the Hospital del Mar, which allowed her to bring her research closer to patients. A fact that, according to the researcher, “is fundamental to speed up the advances in science and the translation to the patient”.
In the interview we will also understand how her personal life has had an effect on her career: “I saw that my gender could be a little problem to combine science and family“. We will also learn in depth about her work on schizophrenia and the relationship of alcohol and microbiota.
What are you waiting for to listen to her?
