From the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) we would like to congratulate our Director General, Jordi Camí, who has recently been awarded a Creu de Sant Jordi. This recognition from the Generalitat de Catalunya – the Government of Catalonia – has been awarded for his scientific and social work, for his contributions to improving people’s quality of life and his involvement in the creation and management of international facilities that have contributed to the country’s leadership in biomedical research – among them, the PRBB itself.
Born in Terrassa, Jordi Camí i Morell is a doctor by training and an expert in neuroscience, drug addiction and cognition. But apart from research and teaching, his professional career is marked by his vision on the positioning of science (and specifically biomedicine) in the Catalan panorama. That is why not only was he the director of the current Hospital del Mar Research Institute (formerly IMIM) for 20 years, but he has also been involved in the gestation of several research centres and has been the driving force behind both the Pasqual Maragall Foundation (FPM) – of which he is currently the vice-president – and the PRBB.
He was also the promoter and manager of biomedicine studies at the Pompeu Fabra University with the creation of the Department of Medicine and Life Sciences (MELIS-UPF), of which he is now Emeritus Professor.
His contributions in the field of ethics and scientific integrity led him to be the first President of the Committee for Research Integrity in Catalonia (CIRCAT), to be a member of the Spanish Bioethics Committee for 5 years and to be the current President of the Spanish Research Ethics Committee.
Dr. Camí’s career has already made him worthy of the Narcís Monturiol medal of the Generalitat de Catalunya in 2000 for his contribution to the progress of science and technology. He has also been recognised by his election as an honorary member of the Biological Sciences section of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans.
“What a great honour to receive the Creu de Sant Jordi! It is also a recognition, through us, to those who have made possible the great research system our country has. I am very grateful to all the friends of the FPM, the PRBB and the UPF who have promoted me”
Jordi Camí
This year the Creu de Sant Jordi has been awarded to a total of 20 personalities and 10 entities that, for their merits, have rendered outstanding services to Catalonia in the defence of its identity or in the civic and cultural sphere.
Jordi, congratulations on this well-deserved recognition and thank you very much for your contributions to biomedical research!
