The International Day of Women and Girls in Science will celebrate its 10th edition in the next few days. It was proclaimed by the UN and UNESCO in 2015 to “promote full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls”. Since then, institutions worldwide have joined the celebrations organising roundtables, talks at schools and other activities. At the PRBB we are organising once again an edit-a-thon and the initiative What is Science? at schools.
Edit-a-thon
On February 11th, the room Marie Curie of PRBB will see a new hybrid edition of the edit-a-thon. After last year’s break, the initiative organised by the PRBB, Viquidones UPF and Amical Wikimedia will gather volunteers to update Wikipedia from a scientific and feminine perspective. They will write the biographies of female researchers and scientists from any field or about their contributions. For the newbies in writing on the online encyclopaedia, guidelines will be provided.
Would you like to join? The edit-a-thon is open to everybody. You can sign in by filling this registration form.

On the same day, the Equality Commission of the Universitat de Barcelona, the Centre de Recursos per a l’Aprenentatge i la Investigació (CRAI) and Viquidones UPF will also run an edit-a-thon. It will be from 12 pm to 2 pm at the Mathematics and Computer Science CRAI from the University of Barcelona.
What is Science?
During the month of February, female researchers from the PRBB will go to several schools to explain what science is to primary school kids. The initiative, already on its fourth edition, wants to break the stereotypes around science and scientists. With activities such as this one, we bring science closer to boys and girls and we try to break the psychological barriers that prevent people from access a scientific career.
#científiques
The Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i la Innovació (FCRI) also join the 11F organising the seventh edition of #científiques, an initiative that connects female researchers with 11-12 year old students. The inauguration will be on the 5th of February at the auditorium of the PRBB and it will gather the participating female scientists in a networking event. Mafalda Dias from the Centre for Genomics Regulation (CRG) will speak about what earth’s life diversity can teach us about human health. This event is invitation only.
