Arcadi Navarro joins Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona

Arcadi Navarro, professor and researcher affiliated with the Institute for Evolutionary Biology (IBE: CSIC-UPF), the Department of Medicine and Life Sciences, Universitat Pompeu Fabra (MELIS-UPF) and the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), as well as the current director of the Pasqual Maragall Foundation, has joined the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona (RACAB) as a full member. 

Having been awarded with the RACAB’s 35th medal, Navarro joins the biology section as the first member with expertise in data science. During his induction ceremony, Navarro delivered an inaugural speech titled “Big Data in Biology, Genomics, Health, and Evolution”. He discussed the critical impact of medical genomics and data science, emphasizing how important integrity is in these fields and their foundational effect in scientific research, particularly within biomedicine and genomics. 

‘There is no scientific progress without data sharing.’

He highlighted that collaboration and innovation are fostered through shared data, and that modern scientific advancements require novel analytical methods. In closing, Navarro called on the scientific community to adopt practices that enable the effective management of the massive volumes of information generated, ensuring that this data is leveraged to advance scientific knowledge and improve the quality of human life globally
