On 21 September the Department of Medicine and Life Sciences, Pompeu Fabra University (MELIS-UPF) kicked off the academic year in style, celebrating the 25th anniversary of both the department and the degree in Human Biology.
Around 150 people gathered in the inner square of the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB) to listen to speeches by the current director of the department, Jordi Garcia-Ojalvo, and by the new rector, Laia de Nadal, and to watch together a video of different alumni who have passed through the faculty during this quarter of a century.
Fina Lorente, Director of the UPF Campus Mar, recalls these 25 years as “a time of continuous learning, taking on challenges, managing conflicts and difficulties but, above all, sharing a project that I have always felt part of”.
For his part, Jordi Garcia-Ojalvo, shared: “In these 25 years we have matured as a university department, both in research and teaching. We began with a pioneering degree in Human Biology, which allowed us to attract great talent from the start, and we are closing this quarter of a century with our own degree in Medicine. This path has made MELIS a nexus between basic and clinical research, following the spirit of the PRBB and its excellent research centres”.
After the speeches, and with a background of images from the last 25 years, the participants followed the party with some food and music, with some of the them immortalising the event at the photocall.
